HI, I AM RICHARD MAINA

Multifaceted by design

I solve problems the way I cook dinner: see what's in the pantry, decide what I want out of it and build around that.

About me
Embedded engineer, Swiss Army knife edition.

01 / WORK

Every problem has a scarce resource: time, compute, ingredients, a team's attention. I name it first, then design around it. My core is embedded and kernel work, but I've worked across enough other fields to see solutions that people inside a single field tend to miss.

Embedded

Close to the hardware, where I started and where I'm most at home.

I began my career in embedded development, thrilled by how much visibility and control you have over your programs. Since then, I've built my skills in inter-process communication and device drivers, and contributed to both Zephyr and the Linux kernel.

Delivery

Taking products from idea to release.

I've guided projects the whole way through, with a hand in everything from specs and UI/UX to planning and keeping people coordinated. Building at startup pace gave me speed, grit and adaptability.

Learning

Always picking up something new, usually by building it.

Lately that's ESP32 projects, further contributions to Zephyr and a curiosity about the world of edge AI.

02 / COOKING

Cooking

Limited ingredients, limited time and a meal that still has to hit its macros. The constraints don't block the design, they define it.

Avocado, egg and tomato on a biscuit, plated on a white plate
No. 01Apr 2026

Breakfast biscuit
Quick breakfast, plated with care. It lasts about two minutes before I scarf it down.

Glazed ribs topped with sesame seeds and sliced scallions in a glass baking dish.

Chinese NY rib
Invited to a Chinese New Year party. I know the flavors but not the cooking, so I twisted a dish I know well.

Glazed chicken thigh with rice and green beans on a white plate
No. 03Jan 2025

Glazed thigh
Meal prep gets boring. A glaze is all it takes to dress up classic chicken and rice.

Braised baby bok choy in a white bowl
No. 04May 2026

Italian bok choy
All that was left was Italian sausage and bok choy, fusion was the only option.

Breaded katsu cutlet on pesto pasta on a white plate
No. 05Jul 2025

Katsu pesto
Katsu usually gets curry. I say a fresh, creamy pesto suits that crispy cutlet better.

03 / CULTURE

Culture

Culture is the lens we all share and each perceive differently. Art gives me inspiration. Basketball shows me split-second decisions with teams moving in concert. Music takes me places I've never been and says what words can't.

Experience

The Moth Company Incorporated, Crete, Illinois (Remote)

Head of Product Development, May 2024 – March 2026

  • Delivered an AI-powered recommendation service powered by Python, Supabase/Postgres embeddings, and serverless edge functions, supporting 1,200+ sessions within two months.
  • Owned technical planning and delivery: scoped requirements, coordinated implementation & testing through production release.

Qualcomm Incorporated, San Diego, California

Engineer, June 2022 – December 2023, Engineering Intern, May 2021 – August 2021

  • Enhanced device performance and stability by designing, implementing and validating Linux kernel IPC driver features in C for Android BSP, supporting HW/SW interfaces using RPMsg, Qualcomm IPC Router and Glink over SMEM.
  • Reproduced complex system failures and isolated root causes using JTAG/TRACE32 and kernel instrumentation, driving fixes through validation with cross-functional teams.
  • Optimized debugging pipelines by developing a boot-time tracing tool in C++ using ftrace tracepoints, improving fault isolation during device initialization and reducing time spent diagnosing root cause.
  • Enabled recovery from crashed remote processors via patches merged into the mainline Linux kernel (v6.11), implementing a hardware-lock API and Qualcomm driver support (lore.kernel.org).
  • Implemented and profiled lightweight TCP/IP (lwIP) stack in C, evaluating throughput and latency tradeoffs to assess feasibility as an IPC transport channel.

Molecular and Biochemical Telecommunications (MBITE) Lab, Lincoln, Nebraska

Graduate Research Assistant, Research Assistant, September 2019 – May 2022

  • Modeled linearized neuron behavior using Python (pandas, numpy, mpmath), enabling accurate channel power estimation.
  • Published Master's Thesis in Simulating Sub-Threshold Communication Channels through Neurons.

GC Image LLC, Lincoln, Nebraska

Software Engineering Intern, August 2019 – May 2020

  • Built KNN and Logistic Regression models in Java to classify chromatography results, including data preprocessing and metric-driven evaluation, achieving +98% accuracy and improving classification consistency.

Housing Technology Solutions Help Desk, Lincoln, Nebraska

Technician, September 2016 – October 2019

  • Led a team of student workers responsible for maintenance of the University housing network consisting of 300+ devices.
  • Responded to user support tickets, troubleshooting technical issues related to network connectivity, hardware and software.

Projects

Zephyr RTOS: Contributions to Driver Subsystem

  • Active contributor to the driver subsystem, merged a CAN driver Kconfig cleanup and currently developing a further fix, validated on ESP32 hardware.

Metal-Mirror: AI Hardware Emulation and Performance Benchmarking, C++, Python

  • Emulated Tenstorrent's tt-metal programming model on a Linux multicore system using pthreads and POSIX shared memory, profiling data movement overhead with perf to quantify the software vs silicon performance gap.

Autonomous Self-balancing robot, C, Python

  • Engineered an autonomous self-balancing robot on a Balboa 32U4 (ATmega32U4 microcontroller) integrating IMU(gyroscope/accelerometer), and motor encoders with a custom PID controller in C, enabling stable balance control.
